U. S. stocks closed mixed on Tuesday, with the Dow ending six straight losses. Us bond yields continue to climb, with 10-year yields approaching 4.7 per cent. Federal Reserve Chairman Colin Powell hinted that stubborn inflation could cause the central bank to maintain a high interest rate policy for longer. Jefferson, vice chairman of the Federal Reserve, said keeping interest rates unchanged would help reduce inflation.

The Dow rose 63.66 points, or 0.17%, to 37798.77; the Nasdaq fell 19.77, or 0.12%, to 15865.25; and the S & P 500 fell 10.44, or 0.21%, to 5051.38.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose for the second day in a row on Tuesday, rising 3.7 basis points to 4.665% in late trading and rising to an intraday high of 4.696%, the highest since November.
